We get things wrong sometimes. When we do, we want to fix it quickly and say that we have.

Reporting an error

Email [email protected] with:

  • The link to the article
  • The specific passage you believe is wrong
  • What you believe is correct, and a source if you have one

We aim to acknowledge every report within two working days.

What we do about it

  • Factual error. We correct the text and add a dated correction note at the foot of the article describing what was changed.
  • Significant error. Where an error materially changed the meaning of a piece, the note goes at the top of the article, not the bottom.
  • Clarification. Where a passage was accurate but open to misreading, we add a dated clarification.
  • Typographical or formatting fixes. Corrected silently, since nothing about the meaning changes.
  • Unpublishing. We do not remove articles to avoid criticism. We remove content only where there is a legal obligation or a genuine risk to someone’s safety.

Complaints

If you believe an article breaches our editorial policy, write to [email protected] with the details. Complaints are reviewed by an editor who was not involved in the original piece. We will respond with our conclusion and what, if anything, we intend to do.

If you are unhappy with that response, you may ask for it to be reviewed by the editor-in-chief.

Right of reply

If you are the subject of an article and believe it is unfair or incomplete, contact us. Where the point is substantive, we will either update the piece or publish your response alongside it.
