Golf health benefits

Golf injury prevention

The overall risk of injury in golf is low in comparison to other sports. Nevertheless, injuries still happen. Injuries to the lower back, wrists, elbows, head, and eyes are common. Injuries are caused by overuse, incorrect technique, hitting the ground instead of the ball, and aggravation of previous injuries.

Injuries can be prevented by following these tips:

  • Before playing, warm up and stretch your back, shoulders, and arms. Use gentle air swings or ball hits with short irons (a type of golf club) after gentle movement and mobility exercises.
  • Learn from your mistakes. Good technique will keep you injury-free.
  • Keep your distance from a swinging club at least four club lengths. Keep an eye on someone who is swinging.
  • Wear good footwear, socks, gloves, and clothing.
  • Before buying golf equipment, have it professionally fitted.
  • During September and April, when UV levels and heat are at their peak, wear sun protection (clothes, hats, sunglasses and 30+ sunscreen).
  • Pre-game, during-game, and after-game, make sure to drink water.
  • Practice the basics of the game and learn the etiquette. Before you swing, make sure no one is standing nearby. Play only after the group in front has left. Players and spectators should shout “fore” to warn of danger. Ground staff should be notified and players should wait for their instructions.
  • When necessary, use a buggy to lift and carry clubs safely.
  • Playing conditions may need to be reconsidered during times of extreme heat. To avoid the hottest parts of the day, play in the early morning or at twilight.
  • In case of injury, stop playing immediately.
  • Regardless of the severity of the injury, seek medical attention immediately.
